John
Southworth Singer
Bypassing the standard critical and commercial templates,
John Southworth has continually followed his own highly
singular vision, often shaped by generally unheralded
and peculiar pop and folk influences. His ever-shifting
genre-transcending aesthetic makes him a chameleon
song maker, who somehow manages to maintain a widely
recognizable imprint on everything he does. Cabaret,
50’s-70’s AM pop, old English balladry,
American folk, music hall, children’s and novelty
song are just a few of the components that make up
his song arsenal.
John’s previous albums, including the much acclaimed,
“The Pillowmaker” (2007 Grimsey Records)
and his debut, “Mars Pennsylvania” (1997
Bar None Records), have earned him a reputation as
a fearlessly inventive and courageous songwriter.
“The Pillowmaker” has since garnered two
cover versions by fellow Canadian artists including
Sarah Slean’s cover of “Eyes Are The Flowers”,
for the upcoming Art of Time Ensemble/Sarah Slean
“Black Flowers” CD, and a duet of “We
Can Live Life” by Veda Hille and Kim Barlow.
Recently John has further expanded his songwriting
scope co-writing songs for Hawksley Workman’s
latest “Los Manlicious”, including the
lead hit single “When You Gonna Flower”,
and for Jully Black’s “Revival”
(“Never Lost My Sight”), as well as composing
songs inspired by Schubert, Schumann, and Korngold
pieces for the Art of Time Ensemble Source and Inspiration
concerts in Toronto. He has worked with and been touted
by artists such as Mary Margaret O’Hara, Gonzales, Ron Sexsmith, Andrew
Bird, Hawksley Workman, Martin Tielli and Sarah Slean.
John’s new record, “Mama Tevatron”,
is expected in early 2009.
