The Big Band Show
November 30-December 1, 2012
harbourfront centre theatre, toronto
The Big Band Show was a rare chance to experience the power and beauty of a full 26-piece big band in an extraordinary range of music written for the genre. Art of Time regulars John Johnson, Rob Piltch, Andrew Downing and Davide Direnzo, were joined by jazz giants Mike Murley, Al Kay, Kevin Turcotte, John MacLeod and a who's who of Canadian jazz artists to perform Duke Ellington's 1960 Nutcracker Suite. Virtuoso classical clarinetist James Campbell was featured in Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto, commissioned by the American bandleader Woody Herman in 1945. Rounding out the slate was Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No. 1, representing American big band jazz as filtered through the creative mind of one of the greatest classical composers of the 20th century.
