Sankofa:
The Soldier's Tale Retold

October 24-27, 2024

harbourfront centre theatre, Toronto

Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold reimagines Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat in a new libretto by poet Titilope Sonuga. Through the journey of a fictional soldier attempting to enlist in WWI, this Soldier's Tale is set against the historical context of the No. 2 Construction Battalion — the only Canadian battalion composed of Black soldiers to serve in the First World War. In a psychological battle with the devil on the road to enlisting, the soldier embodies the battalion’s resilience and enduring struggle against racism, discrimination and historical erasure. Like the symbol of the Sankofa bird from which this story draws its name (a word in the Twi language of Ghana which means to go back and retrieve what was forgotten), this work blends past and future as the rhythm of Sonuga's poetry weaves through Stravinsky's original music. Sankofa is an invitation to honour a difficult history while moving toward a more promising future.

harbourfront centre theatre, toronto

This concert program dared to capture the unfettered spirit of the Weimar Republic - one of the most, if not the most fertile cultural periods in modern history. The arts in the Weimar Republic were at the vanguard of modernism. Expressionism permeated everything - from the films of Fritz Lang and F. W. Murnau to the paintings of Oskar Kokshka and Max Beckmann to the literature of Franz Kafka and Robert Musil. In music, the 2nd Viennese school and Jazz pointed towards the future and the Dada movement aimed to break with the past. The highlights included Dada and jazz influenced works by Erwin Schulhoff, music from the Berlin Cabaret, selections from the Three Penny Opera and a couple of surprises.

Who is We:
Voices Across the Divides

May 12-14, 2022

harbourfront centre theatre, Toronto

This was an invitation from the Art of Time Ensemble and Writers Collective of Canada to experience the transformative and healing aspects of writing, of creativity.

How can writing transform a life? Of the writer, of the listener?  How are we rescued by a new voice, finding within us a purpose we’ve never experienced before?  Whose voices matter?

Who is We?

Who Is We is a question asked by a single voice in pursuit of community, about questioning our notions of “Us and Them”. The past couple of years have made it clear that whatever each of us may have assumed our We to have been – whether sentimentally rooted in family, practically framed by politics, or idealistically the human race  – the time has come to acknowledge that questions need to be asked.

Abbey Road

September 26-28, 2019

harbourfront centre theatre, Toronto

“This was a reprise of our our Abbey Road project from 2009 - the first time I dared to tamper with the Beatles’ music. I chose to start with this iconic album because of the rich and ambitious arrangements of the originals and the fact that they were never performed live. As with our other popular music projects, I wanted to find that fine line between retaining the authenticity of the original songs while pushing as many boundaries as possible in the reinvention of the arrangements. Ten different composers worked as arrangers on this project. Each bringing their own musical sensibilities and vocabularies to the task. The original vocal harmonies which were not part of the first production in 2009 were added in 2015.” Andrew Burashko

I Send You This Cadmium Red

March 20-21, 2019

mcmaster university, hamilton, ON

“I Send You This Cadmium Red is a film, a painting, an essay, a concert and, yes, a play all at once. Therefore none of the above. It’s something else entirely. And it’s extraordinary. It’s a contemplation of colour via words, music, words and projected animation. Colour is explored as a substance, a medium, a mood, an opaque fact and a window into infinity, but also as something tangible, almost human. And I can’t remember the last time I saw a play or a film in which the inevitable apartheid between form and content, style and substance, was so elegantly obliterated by a piece that is so utterly what it’s about.” Brian D. Johnson, Mcleans Magazine.

With music by Gavin Bryars and animation by Bruce Alcock, I Send You This Cadmium Red, (based on a correspondence between writer/critic/artist John Berger and filmmaker/artist John Christie) was conceived and adapted for the stage by Andrew Burashko and directed by Daniel Brooks. This was a remount of a 2011 CanStage/Art of Time co-production.

Sound and Colour

March 22-24, 2018

harbourfront centre theatre, toronto

Alexander Scriabin's 24 Preludes, Op. 11  for piano were presented in a special solo performance by Andrew Burashko. Each of the preludes was bathed in an immersive colourfield experience, crafted by esteemed lighting designer Kevin Lamotte, corresponding to Scriabin's synesthetic correlation of colour to music.

Paired with a lecture about art and synesthesia from renowned synesthesia expert, neurologist Dr. Richard Cytowic (author of The Man Who Tasted Shapes), this show was a feast for the ears, the eyes and the mind.

”Glenn Gould was a musical genius, a visionary and a great eccentric. Between 1961 and 1975 he made a series of programs for the CBC that featured him as both performer and commentator. His unique perspectives on the music he was performing were presented in the form of lengthy and eloquent introductions preceding his performances. On the 45th anniversary of his death, I thought it would be interesting to license some of those introductions from the CBC and screen them immediately preceding live performances of Beethoven’s A major Cello Sonata and the Shostakovich Quintet. I also chose to include two short clips of Gould addressing his disdain for audiences and live performance - he quit the stage in 1964 at the age of 32 - and his prescient views on how technology would change the recording and proliferation of music as it was known during his lifetime - two recurring themes in his relationship to music.” Andrew Burashko
