Stravinsky: Sankofa, The Soldier’s Tale Retold &

Histoire du soldat Suite

February 6, 2026

“Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier’s Tale) is brash, sardonic, rambunctious. It thumbs its nose at the listener while performing somersaults on a tight rope. Rich and relentlessly adventurous, it is complex and modernist yet composed of earthy elements - folk music, marches, chorales and popular dances such as the waltz, ragtime, tango. The music is intricate and tightly knit yet freewheeling - sometimes careening and verging on chaos. From the joyful to the horrific, Stravinsky dares the musicians to perform super human feats at break-neck speeds with the precision of surgeons.

Completed and premiered in 1918 in Lusanne, Switzerland, where Stravinsky was waiting out WWI, this theatrical work was intended to be “read, played and danced” by three actors, one or more dancers and a septet of musicians. The libretto, composed in French by Swiss poet, C.F. Ramuz, was based on a Russian folk tale about a soldier who sells his violin (a metaphor for his soul) to the Devil for riches – a ubiquitous trope explored by Goethe and Marlowe among others. Perhaps because I only knew “L’Histoire” in the English translation, I always found the story disjointed and convoluted, inferior to the music, and for years dreamt of doing something new with it.

Sometime around 2010, I stumbled upon another version of A Soldier’s Tale, written in the 1990s by Kurt Vonnegut, an author who loomed large in my youth. Devoid of magic or fairytale symbolism, Vonnegut’s version was rooted in brutal realism. Having survived the fire-bombing of Dresden as an American POW and outraged that a story about a ‘Soldier’s Tale’ did not address the horrors of war, he wrote a dark story about an American soldier during WWII who was executed for desertion. Upon hearing a recording, I was disappointed to discover that Vonnegut made no effort to tailor his story to the original music and instead, used bits and pieces of Stravinsky’s music as background. But the idea of creating a new A Soldier’s Tale, that made a statement with an important social resonance, was firmly planted in my imagination.

Fast forward to the summer of Covid lockdowns in 2020. A friend sent me a recording by Canadian hip hop artist Shad, titled A Short Story About War – a brilliant album looking at war from manifold perspectives. Although there was no narrative arc to the album, there was a recurring character, an immigrant kid from Toronto, a sniper in the Canadian army. That album was the inspiration to create a new version of Soldier’s Tale about a black soldier in a white army.

It took a couple of years to find the right collaborator. The wait paid off. Librettist Titilope Sonuga is an Edmonton-based, Nigerian-born poet. When I approached her with the idea of creating a new A Soldier’s Tale about a black soldier in the Canadian army, I asked that it be an homage to the original in the following ways: that the libretto be written in rhyming verse; for the same characters of Soldier, Devil and Narrator; that it follow the original structure by having the Devil appear in different guises and that the new libretto make perfect sense with the original music. It was Sonuga’s idea to base it on a fictional soldier from the historical 2nd Construction Battalion during WWI – the only entirely black battalion in the Canadian army – abused by their white officers and relegated to digging ditches because their commanders refused to give them arms. In this version, the soldier encounters the Devil on his way to enlist and relinquishes his identity and heritage (in the form of an amulet of Sankofa given to him by his mother) for the ‘privilege’ of serving in the white man’s war.

I couldn’t be more proud of how we managed to wed this strikingly different tale in such harmony to the original score. Even more importantly, I’m proud to have had a part in bringing this important piece of history to greater light. The classical music world needs more works with social relevance.”

From Jazz to Jackboots (2025)

From Jazz to Jackboots, directed by Justin Stephenson

JANUARY 2025

"…they loathe art, the product of a yearning for life, because that, too, evades control." Josef Skvorecky

"From Jazz to Jackboots" is an experimental animated dance film exploring the Nazi regime's methodical censorship of jazz through their "10 Rules and Regulations for Dance Bands." The film reimagines itself through progressively restricted variations of jazz standard, "Minnie the Moocher," transitioning from the freeform of expressionist painting and collage to statuesque perfection. Through sophisticated animation techniques and meticulous visual design, the work unfolds as simultaneously joyful, lyrical, ethereal, surgical, horrific and funereal—a timely reminder that the battle between artistic expression and authoritarian control remains urgently relevant today.” Justin Stephenson

The Soldier's Tale Retold

October 24-27, 2024

harbourfront centre theatre, Toronto

Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold reimagines Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat in a new libretto by poet Titilope Sonuga. Through the journey of a fictional soldier attempting to enlist in WWI, this Soldier's Tale is set against the historical context of the No. 2 Construction Battalion — the only Canadian battalion composed of Black soldiers to serve in the First World War. In a psychological battle with the devil on the road to enlisting, the soldier embodies the battalion’s resilience and enduring struggle against racism, discrimination and historical erasure. Like the symbol of the Sankofa bird from which this story draws its name (a word in the Twi language of Ghana which means to go back and retrieve what was forgotten), this work blends past and future as the rhythm of Sonuga's poetry weaves through Stravinsky's original music. Sankofa is an invitation to honour a difficult history while moving toward a more promising future.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: 6 Protest Songs (2024)

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: 6 Protest Songs, directed by Jessica Rowe

APRIL 26, 2022

In May of 2018, Art of Time Ensemble presented a highly successful festival of protest music at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in Toronto, ON over three nights entitled "All We Are Saying". In September 2022 we restaged some of those performances with Jackie Richardson, Shakura S’Aida and Tom Wilson and created an intimate concert documentary with the intention of making these performances accessible and free to people across the city through various community partnerships. The six songs, spanning forty years, collectively speak to the injustices of racism and war and reflect our present day as strongly as when they were penned. The songs include Sam Cooke's Civil Rights anthem "A Change is Gonna Come" (1964), Abel Meeropol's harrowing depiction of hate, "Strange Fruit" (1939) made famous by Billie Holiday and Gil Scott Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (1970), whose present-day relevance needs no explanation.

This concert program dared to capture the unfettered spirit of the Weimar Republic - one of the most, if not the most fertile cultural periods in modern history. The arts in the Weimar Republic were at the vanguard of modernism. Expressionism permeated everything - from the films of Fritz Lang and F. W. Murnau to the paintings of Oskar Kokshka and Max Beckmann to the literature of Franz Kafka and Robert Musil. In music, the 2nd Viennese school and Jazz pointed towards the future and the Dada movement aimed to break with the past. The highlights included Dada and jazz influenced works by Erwin Schulhoff, music from the Berlin Cabaret, selections from the Three Penny Opera and a couple of surprises.

Songs of Leonard Cohen Live

October 2022

Songs of Leonard Cohen Live is Art of Time’s 8th album. Recorded live in 2018 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre.

“In choosing the songs for this tribute, I wanted to cover the entire span of Cohen’s career, showcasing both, well known classics and lesser-known tracks such as “Come Healing” and Treaty” from very late in his career. I also, very deliberately chose a diverse group of composers and arrangers with disparate sensibilities to create a very distinct aesthetic universe for each song. The singers on this album are all veterans and icons of the Canadian pop music scene - all forces of nature and in their own right. Their passion for these songs shines through in every performance.” - Andrew Burashko

Who is We:
Voices Across the Divides

May 12-14, 2022

harbourfront centre theatre, Toronto

This was an invitation from the Art of Time Ensemble and Writers Collective of Canada to experience the transformative and healing aspects of writing, of creativity.

How can writing transform a life? Of the writer, of the listener?  How are we rescued by a new voice, finding within us a purpose we’ve never experienced before?  Whose voices matter?

Who is We?

Who Is We is a question asked by a single voice in pursuit of community, about questioning our notions of “Us and Them”. The past couple of years have made it clear that whatever each of us may have assumed our We to have been – whether sentimentally rooted in family, practically framed by politics, or idealistically the human race  – the time has come to acknowledge that questions need to be asked.

Art of Time Ensemble’s annual holiday concert both thumbed its nose at convention and embraced the sentiments of the season. It was an irreverent, fresh approach to seasonal entertainment that experiments with the familiar and offers an eclectic range of unconventional holiday music from artists like Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Tom Lehrer, and many more. Kick off your holiday celebrations with singers Jackie Richardson, Chris Murphy, David Wall, Tom Wilson and Liam Russell, who performed an extensive selection of festive tunes that ranged in sentiment from nostalgia to melancholy and mischief.

Christmas in Prison (Live)

November 26, 2021

With its seventh album Christmas In Prison, the Art of Time Ensemble – Canada’s genre-busting ensemble that fuses high art with popular culture – welcomed a distinctive gallery of guest artists to reimagine music from the holiday season.

Singers Jessica Mitchell, Jackie Richardson, Liam Russell-Titcomb, David Wall, Tom Wilson, & the Canadian Children’s Opera Company joined the Art of Time Ensemble, led by its founder/artistic director Andrew Burashko, on the album - a compilation of live recordings taken from five years of Art of Time’s popular To All A Good Night annual holiday shows.

The album features an eclectic mix of songs from legendary songwriters including John Lennon, Tom Waits, John Prine, Stephen Colbert & Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, Harrick Connick Jr., as well as works by Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) & Albert Hague, Tom Lehrer, & Alfred Schnittke. Much like the series of concerts that inspired it, this album aims to upend tradition as much as it celebrates it.

This abridged version of our Leonard Cohen tribute from 2018 was created for our Virtually Live series during the Covid lockdowns.

Ain't Got Long is Art of Time Ensemble's 6th studio album.
